Baby Boy’s Room Blues…or Maybe Not

Guess what, it’s a boy!  Time to crack out the blue paint right?…perhaps not.  Tradition paints the boy’s room blue and the girl’s room pink.  One is supposedly masculine and the other feminine.  However, let’s look at it from a more practical point of view.  Let’s first find out what the colors do for us as humans.

Color

Basic color theory tells us that there are warm colors and cool colors.  It is not difficult to figure out that your warm colors are your reds, oranges and yellows.  Your cool colors are your blues, greens and purples.  You also have your neutral colors, which are your browns, blacks and whites.  Generally speaking, your warm colors can cause an increase in blood flow and elevate the heart rate, whereas your cool colors have a calming affect.  So, ask yourself, which of these colors would you want in the room where your baby sleeps?  You must also know that colors placed side by side can have a different effect psychologically then the colors by themselves.   You can practice by putting colors side by side to see how they work together so you can choose the appropriate colors for your baby’s room. Having just had an education in color theory you might want to be creative with your baby crib bedding when it comes to choosing color.  However, it seems that tradition runs strong and the bedding for boys usually runs in blues or greens, and nowadays they can come in some oranges and yellows too.  Fortunately, they do have bedding that is gender neutral, more on the contemporary side, just in case you do want to experiment more with color and add your own elements to the room.

Theme

If you want to choose bedding using a theme, there are plenty from which to choose.  They come in a variety of styles for different tastes.  Take for example the Tanzia by Glenna Jean, Paradise by Cotton Tale and Chibi Zoo by Trend lab.  All three are safari themes and yet uniquely different.   Tanzia is made of rich soft fabrics, neutral tones and a hint of wild animal.  Paradise by contrast is filled with bold, vibrant colors and simple animal drawings.  While Chibi Zoo combines earth tones, pastels and just a touch of more vibrant colors, with its animals more cartoonlike in their appearance.  Each of these styles are unique, stylish and attractive and appealing their own group of devoted followers.

Decorating Tips

Remember, when decorating with a specific theme, your child will grow out of what you have chosen for them.  A recent paint commercial shows a gentleman trying to cover up a boldly striped room with paint because his son grew out of zebras and is now into dinosaurs.  So, word to the wise when decorating, create your walls and floors to be flexible.  It will save money as your son grows.  If you do not do this, then you face the same challenge as the father in the paint commercial that must repaint the walls and redecorate because his son’s tastes had changed. Remember make room for storage.  I love to look around home improvement stores, craft stores and thrift stores to find storage solutions.  Some of it is already designed to be used for storage, but make sure to expand your horizons.  You never know what you will find that you can put together to become a decoration and perfect for storage at the same time.  Finally, take advantage of the variety of bedding sets offered at Babymania at great prices.  You will find that they are not all blue!
