Feb 7th, 2012 by babymania | 0

Getting an infant is easily the most wonderful experience a lady might have because it is a fulfillment of the biological purpose of the feminine species. Following the having a baby process, the actual work starts. Feeding bottles, diaper changes, immunization records are only a couple of from the things the brand new mother needs to learn rapidly. And something important factor to think about within the arrival of the people may be the type of baby crib bedding she or he uses.  The main rule to follow in selecting the best baby crib bedding for the precious infant is safety.  The 2nd rule states safety and also the third rule stresses safety. We’re to summarize that it’s not enough to express it, it should be stressed that baby crib bedding is crucial for that convenience of the infant.

In the article regarding how to discover the perfect baby crib bedding, it should be neither way too hard nor too soft. Previously, cot death or SIDS was credited to very soft baby crib bedding. This happened once the baby’s bed mattress is simply too soft that his nose and mouth will get covered and also the air he exhales may be the air he inhales. This really is harmful for him since he’d breath co2 instead of oxygen and also the effects can lead to sleepiness, coma as well as dying.

You will find lots of styles and makes in selecting the newborn’s mattress. And knowning that, the result is the baby crib bedding should be an ideal match the selected equipment.  The 3 major choices are: a bassinet, a crib or perhaps a cradle.  What distinguishes one in the other?

A bassinet is definitely an oblong-formed basket that works as a mattress to have an infant.  But sometimes, round cradles can also be found. A crib is really a mattress that’s flanked rich in side bars for any baby or youthful child’s safety. Baby cribs are often cheaper because the baby can utilize it from infancy to 2 years.  While a cradle is really a small low mattress that the infant uses which has rockers on its stand.  In most these, the fabric accustomed to result in the equipment should alert and signal towards the mother just how much safety safeguards are essential.

Cradles are often lacey and filled with trimmings.  The infant bedding must fit the bassinet to ensure that the newborn’s space is sufficient for her or him to have the ability to roll from side  to side. The crib is generally square, thus, beds could be suited to how big the crib. The infant bedding usually is some coverlet and small pillows. Hotdog pillows can be also placed inside. However, the pillows shouldn’t be a lot more than 2 or 3 lest the baby can get up on them and may fall over. The cradle comes in various dimensions and shapes. Some moms prefer cradles to ensure that once the baby is cranky, they might be rocked to become settled lower. The infant bedding for any cradle should stick to the form of it.  Very little can be put within it as it is used mainly to rock the infant to rest. However, one do not need to the 3 to help keep the infant safe, warm and secure. One is going to do which would rely on the parent’s preference.  The most popular will be the crib since it may be employed for a very long time. Since we have covered the fundamental equipment, how can we furnish it with baby crib bedding? We have previously established the baby crib bedding should fit the sleeping equipment to prevent accidents along with other untoward occurrences.  Probably the most appropriate material to make use of is cotton as it’s absorbent and awesome towards the baby’s skin. Different designs can be used to stimulate the newborn’s color and pattern recognition.  Therefore, the infant bedding is an important element in keeping the infant happy and healthy.

Daddy Duties – Daddy’s Bond with the Baby

Jan 2nd, 2012 by babymania | 5

About a century ago, perhaps a little before that, many father’s weren’t really involved in the bonding process before or after their child’s birth.  There was a time where they were left out in the waiting room until they were summoned to see their newborn baby.  Fortunately though, many new dads want to be involved in the whole process.  Yet, he is at a loss, what can he do for 9 months while baby is still in the womb.  Once the baby is born and if mommy is breast-feeding, then she usually ends up feeding, changing and putting the baby to sleep.  So, to start off…ladies, let’s get the daddies involved from the beginning.

Nine Months to Pro

Want to wash away those first time parent worries?  Well, it might sound kind of quirky, but turn it into a game and make it fun.  Use each month during pregnancy to learn about one subject that is important for both of you to know.  One month could be all about the diaper.  Have diaper-changing contests, the winner getting a reward, not baby related, reminding the two of you to keep the balance.  Talk about using disposables vs. cloth diapers and budget for it!  Learn what you need to know about pooping, peeing and rashes.  You can role-play potty training with each other.  I know it sounds kind of silly, and you may be asking yourself, who does this, but let’s face it, if you are new at this stuff, it’s a great way to retain information instead of just reading it out of a book!

Daddy Speaks

Studies have shown that at 7 ½ months a baby can distinguish voices in the womb.  Thus, let daddy talk to baby about what happened at work that day, while mommy listens in on the conversation.

Burping King

Well, if mommy is breast-feeding, then let daddy do the burping.  If you didn’t know this or practice it, babies should be burped before switching to the other breast.  So hand baby over to daddy when it is time.   What you may not have known about burping is that the shoulder technique works because the shoulder bone lightly presses on your baby’s stomach and this is what promotes burping.  The patting on the back helps to dislodge some of the gas bubbles, but it is the pressure against the stomach that really makes it happen.

Baby Massage Master

Well, new dads can watch videos on YouTube, download free information from iTunes or even talk to your nearest friend from India.  Yep, that is right.  Baby massage has been practiced in India for centuries because of Ayurveda, an ancient medicine practice that includes massage as a key element to its therapies.  So, in many Indian households you will find people who are much more skilled in the technique then most of us in the U.S.  Traditionally, they use olive oil for their babies skin and having seen the massage in action, I was amazed at how the baby responded and got to do it myself.  At first I was quite hesitant, but came to find that only after a short time it came naturally.

Baby Watch Systems Are A Go

Let new dad’s discover their newborns reflexes and unique developmental patterns during the first few months of a newborns life.  Encourage him to continue to talk to Jr., establish eye and skin contact and help Jr. to gain trust not only for mommy, but daddy too.

Work, Walk or Dance

Finally, using a baby sling or a stroller, have daddy take your baby on a ride.  He can work around the house with the baby in the sling, just as long as he is not doing anything thing that is toxic etc.  Let him enoy a little dancing or a walk in the park.  These activities will not only help daddy establish a bond with the baby, it will help daddy relax as well from a long day at work.

Dads are an essential part of healthy child development.  So moms, resist the temptation to correct your husband if he is doing something different, but safely, from how you would do it.   Encourage him and the whole family will be happier and have more energy throughout the day.

Milk, Solids and Other Food Marvels

Jan 2nd, 2012 by babymania | 8

Feeding your children is one of the most essential responsibilities placed on you as a parent.  Thus, there are many discussions about breast-feeding verses formula feeding, when to introduce solids, nutrition etc.  However, it doesn’t have to be complicated at all.  So we break it down and invite you to remember one important fact about our bodies and that is that they are amazing at what they were designed to do.  Having said this let’s break it down.

Breast Feeding VS Formula Feeding

Studies have shown that breast-feeding is the healthiest choice for your child with some exceptions.  If a mother has a serious infection, smokes or is using illicit drugs then the formula is the healthiest option.  Are you an awful parent if you choose to formula feed, absolutely not!  However, this choice must be made knowing that breast-fed babies have anti-bodies that boost their immune systems and the nutrition content changes as they grow to support this growth.  Formula just doesn’t have a way to exactly imitate these two inherent features.  However, breast-fed babies actually feed more often because cow’s milk formulas are “heavier” then breast milk.

If formula is in your feeding plan, then make sure you choose one that is made from cow’s milk and has the highest concentration of DHA as you can find.  Soy based products can be used if you need to lay off the cow’s milk formula due to constipation or diarrhea.

While we are talking about milk, let’s mention bottle-feeding.  It is a lot easier and faster for a baby to bottle-feed then to latch onto a breast.   Breast-feeding is “self-regulating” so it is very hard to over feed because the milk production adjusts with the demands of your baby.  So, if you are using formula and you notice your child spits up a lot, it may be because they are just eating too much and have had enough.  If you are breast-feeding, then introduce the use of a bottle at about 2 weeks.  This gives your baby enough time to get the hang of breast-feeding, so the bottle doesn’t seem so attractive they won’t want to breast feed anymore.  It also allows others to bond with your child and help you to get a needed break!

Bringing in the Solids

Before you bring the solids, your baby must be able to hold his/her head in a steady upright position, can sit-up with support, are showing interest in eating and you have the OK from your baby’s doctor and then you are good to go.  Start off with one tablespoon of single grain, iron fortified baby cereal and mix it with 4 – 5 tablespoons of breast milk or formula.  If your baby needs a little binding, as evidenced in their diaper, then choose oatmeal or rice cereal.  If your baby needs things a little looser, then choose barley.  Always put this concoction in a bowl, never a bottle, even if it is the consistency of the milk.  Your baby might “spit” the cereal out at first; this does not necessarily mean that they don’t like it.  This reaction is most commonly associated with the tongue reflex they use for sucking.  If it doesn’t work the first time, wait a few days and try it again.  Once they have learned to swallow this concoction, thicken it up a little at a time as they get used to it.  Then start introducing pureed food one at a time, waiting 3 – 5 days before introducing a new one.  This will help you easily identify how your child is responding to that food.  Make sure to mix up the colors to provide nutritional balance, you know, not all the orange stuff at the same time.  By ages 8 – 10 months you can add finely chopped finger foods.   Breast milk or formula gets fed to your baby between meals.

The “No” List

Before age one stay away from cow’s milk, citrus, honey, corn syrup and peanut butter.  Potential chocking hazards include foods that are: small and slippery, dry and hard to chew or sticky or tough.  Also, if the vegetable is especially dark in color like spinach or beets then choose the store bought baby version to avoid harmful nitrates often found in canned or fresh versions.

Here is one of the best tips out of it all, our kids are excellent self-regulators so do not force them to eat when they are full.  If they are gaining weight then they are getting what they need!

Sleepless Sounds of Parenting

Jan 2nd, 2012 by babymania | 2

(Making Mommy’s, Daddy’s & Baby’s Days and Nights More Restful)

Repeatedly, the word goes out that babies and kids should have some kind of routine, adults too actually.  Everywhere parents of newborns look worn down as if they don’t know how they are going to make it through another day.  Enter these homes and you won’t find routines.  If you ask them why not, the response will be that it is just not possible.  Yet, when it comes down to it, functioning properly is not possible with utter exhaustion and fatigue and should motivate all parents to make a sleep routine possible.

Start your baby on a sleep routine early on so when nightly feeding isn’t necessary, then transitioning to sleeping through the night is a breeze.

The “Surrounding” Rules

The general rule of thumb is to make eating, sleeping and playing separate.  Additionally, bedtime should be distinguishable from nap times during the day.  Establish this type of routine from the very start when your baby comes home from the hospital.  So from between 7pm – 9pm at night remove the regular stimulants so bedtime is a boring time.  Yes, this means no music and all the other playthings.  You can practice the 3 B’s bath, breast/bottle and bed.  Make sure the crib is in a dark room and let others besides Mommy, put baby to sleep sometimes.  This is essential for Mommy’s health and later on for your child to learn how to self-soothe back to sleep.  Put your baby while they are still groggy in the crib, this way they associate sleeping with the crib, not other places like on Mommy’s breast or in a car seat.

Baby & People Interactions at Bedtime

One way to help your baby make a connection with bedtime is if you use a simple gesture like a soft stroke of the face that is done only at bedtime.  Additionally, after about 4 months your baby doesn’t need to feed every 2-4 hours so you can begin training them to self-sooth.  Which means you will have to endure your sweet baby’s crying and must resist the temptation to go in right away to calm their fears.  You do this by deciding how long you can hear your baby cry before you come to their rescue.  When you do, make sure it is only a pat on their little bottom or stroke on the cheek.  Resist the temptation to talk, pick up your child, sing etc.  Then leave again.  Do this again if your child wakes up during the night crying.  Eventually, they will learn how to sooth themselves to sleep and will sleep through the night and so will you.

Nap Time

Naps should be scheduled too.  Your baby’s body will tell you when they need a nap, but you can anticipate at least one being around 9am, another around 2 pm because of their circadian rhythms.   Try to ensure naps are no later that 4pm because this can throw off natural rhythms.   Naps should be about an hour long.  Help them to learn this by keeping them in their crib for an hour, no picking them up or feeding.   If their surroundings are boring eventually the will get sleepy and fall asleep.  Like all situations, if you give in, then they will know that if they keep things up they can get their way.  Don’t let them sleep longer than 3 hours per nap.  If nap lengths become shorter after a consistent basis this means you should probably reduce the naps to one longer one per day.  This happens around 12 – 15 months.

Average Hours of Sleep Based on Age (Remember These Are AVERAGE Numbers)

1 – 4 Weeks = 15 – 16 hours, maybe even more

1 – 3 Years = 12 – 14 hours

1 – 12 Months = 14 – 15 hours

3 – 6 Years = 10 – 12 hours

As is always the case with all parenting skills, observe your child and listen.  Each child is different and they will learn how to tell you what they need.  Keep in mind that if your baby wakes in the morning smiling, even after you have started training your child to self-sooth, then you know your child has not been traumatized for life!

The Pooping Sensation (You’re Talking About It, They Are Feeling It)

Dec 22nd, 2011 by babymania | 3

Who would have thought that poop would be a common topic of discussion after the birth of your first child.  It is common for parents to be concerned about the nature of their child’s elimination channels.  Yet, there are some things to remember about the whole process.

Color

The cycle is as follows: sticky greenish black with a tarlike thickness when baby is first born.  You may not even see this stage depending on your length of stay at the hospital.  This substance is normal and is called meconium.  Then it transitions to green, mustard yellow then to seedy yellowish green or brown.

Smell

Doctors are not worried about smell.  In fact, breast-fed babies have poop that is less likely to smell that that of the formula-fed babies.  Remember not to worry about the smell, doctors don’t.

Frequency

Don’t stress if there is less.  Patterns can change frequently.  If your child is breast-feeding most likely they will eliminate more frequently that formula fed babies because of the natural laxative in breast milk.  However, based on what you eat, this may affect the frequency too.  The thing to look for is if your child is regularly urinating, a sign that your child is hydrated.  If your child poops a lot, the key to calming your worries is asking if they are gaining weight.  If the answer is yes, then hooray, your baby’s bowels are working great!

Constipation

“True” constipation shows up as a sign of the consistency of your child’s poop.  If it is hard and looks like rabbit pellets then your baby is constipated.  Solve this by making sure your baby is hydrated with breast milk or formula and that you Mom are hydrated too.  If your baby is formula feeding, switch to a lactose free or soy-based formula, as lactose can cause binding.  Breast-feeding is okay.  Try an over-the-counter glycerin suppository if your baby has not eliminated within 10 days.   For older babies and toddlers include loosening foods like cherries, apricots, raisins and prunes into your children’s diets, you might want to puree them depending on age.  Keep them active and reduce the amount of binding foods they eat if they have a tendency towards constipation.

Diarrhea

It may seem contrary to logic, but the best thing for diarrhea is to keep your baby or child hydrated. They are loosing a lot of water.  Once again, change up the formula if the one you are using has lactose.  You can change back once your child has had 3-4 days without any diarrhea.  Remember, your child may not want to eat.  This symptom is okay since they will gain their weight back once they are feeling better.    Children can eat bananas, rice, applesauce and toast to help bind things up.

The Doos Doos Bring Diaper Rash Blues

A diaper rash is not a yeast infection unless you see evidence of red bumps in their creases.  Using this as a guide there are ways to prevent the irritation caused by a wet or dirty diaper.  First of all use warm water to gently clean the area.  Baby wipes can irritate the already sore skin.  Make sure your baby’s skin is dry before applying a layer of protective cream that serves as a barrier between diaper and baby skin.  If you can, let your child run around without a diaper to “air out.”  If they don’t poop at night then letting them sleep without a diaper is also a good option, making sure of course that you have a mattress protector that gets changed.

Remember when your baby’s bottom is on the line, there are lots of simple things you can do to make sure they are doing fine!

Weird Body Woes (The Crazy Stuff that Happens to the Body While Pregnant)

Dec 22nd, 2011 by babymania | 4

First of all, before we get into this topic, lets remind every Mom-to-be that if this is your first pregnancy, not to worry.  Each woman’s body is different.  Your body will respond differently to the hormone onslaught that goes on inside to help your body to prepare for the birth of your beautiful child.  The hormones change your body so you can have a baby and remain safe.  Unfortunately, for us, these hormones can affect parts of our body that have nothing to do with the birthing process.

Mind Madness – Stress and Depression

We address this first because it is so vital to gain control over these things while pregnant.  It will make your experience better during pregnancy and it is healthier for you both.  Bartok the Bat in Anastasia says, though slightly altered, “too much cortisol, it’s a killer, sir.”  Worrying about things triggers cortisol to be released and so remember these two important things: 1) You have been given innate powers, bestowed from on High, you can do this! 2) Instead of focusing on what you can’t control, focus on what can be controlled and leave the rest alone.

Controlling Stress & Depression – The Solutions

· Exercise - Just get up and move.  Identify what form of exercise doesn’t seem so daunting to fit into the schedule. Will it be Wii Just Dance 3, going for a walk, going to the gym or popping in your favorite fitness DVD? What is most important is to figure out what makes it easy for you to just move and then do it.  It is amazing how it improves your mood…. immensely!

· Meditate – yep, whether it is prayer, the latest Deepak Chopra technique or listening to the top 10 most relaxing songs as discovered by Mindlab International, go ahead and find your inner peace and connect with the strength and peace within.

· Sleep – This can be difficult during pregnancy so here are some great tips to increase how you sleep, and yes, we fully acknowledge that during and after pregnancy it is still difficult to get good rest, but at least it can be improved by:

o Place pillows in strategic places as you sleep, to allow your lungs some access to expand a little and breath better

o No water after 6pm

o Use Tylenol to alleviate pain. It is actually a lot safer than not sleeping well on a consistent basis.  If you have a natural way to do it, then do this too!

o Drink warm milk, soy milk or rice milk, just not after 6pm

o Make sure the room you sleep in is dark, helps with deeper sleep, no distractions

o Eat dark green veggies, they increase your dopamine levels which help with sleep

o Make sure to drink at least 2 quarts of water daily, not after 6pm of course

Skin Skirmishes

Make sure to take extra care of it, as your hormones are affecting it too.

· Acne solutions – Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and make sure to exfoliate.  Acne is merely a clogging of pores and inflammation.  If you clean those pores, balance your PH and get rid of bacteria you control your acne

· Stretch marks – They are cracks in the dermis so prevent the cracks.  Start early and massage your abdomen, thighs & breasts on a regular basis.  Use a lotion to increase elasticity.  Honey won’t mind, this practice helps with intimacy during pregnancy

· Hair Loss – Hair starts to fall out after the baby is born, so be gentle on it

Whatever you do, breathe!  You are going to be a great Mom.  The fact that you are educating yourself indicates this truth.  Look in the mirror and remind yourself that just like that little one inside you are as much a miracle as that baby! You were there once; it didn’t change just because you grew!

Totally Posh

For those who don’t know the word, posh is the informal word used commonly in Britain referring to things that are elegant, stylish and luxurious.  I first heard the word from my friends from India.  So given this definition Glenna Jean is hands down a brand of luxury.  Just take a look at the fabrics.  They are most definitely fabrics that will help build those synapses in your baby because of the various textures and softness.  We might even find a few Mom’s out there cuddling with these linens!

Organic or 100% Cotton Lovers

Well for you out there that are all natural or closer to natural, we have some options available for you too.  Hands down Lambs & Ivy has a larger selection of 100% cotton selections.  Kids Line comes with a few selections like the Willow Crib Set or the Butterfly Meadow.  Completely organic is a product we don’t offer at Baby Mania and you will find that these specialty brands are subdued in color.  This is quite understandable because completely organic bedding means the dies are all natural as well.

Go Country or Maybe Modern

Some people are all about the country style and look.  Brandee Danielle has designs that produce that feel.  Yet, they did something surprising, they started adding some modern bedding as well.  It is kind of like the Deep South decided to make up with progressive North and what you get is the best of both worlds!

Coastal Wonders

If you like the wispy feel of coastal living then you will love the Cotton Tale and N Selby Designs.  These two different lines by the same designer reflect the southern California influence of the ocean combined with a sense of class and a hint of modern too.

Lollipops and Roses by Cotton Tale

All Mixed Up!

If you want to choose a brand where you find the designs all mixed up you will find it with Trend Lab.  Despite its name, you would think that all they carry are designs that are trendy and modern.  This is not the case; you will find designs that are quite versatile.  This is a great brand to choose if you want to buy bedding that grows with your child.  Some bedding designs your child can quickly grow out of, but these designs are great because they are more classic in style so they won’t grow out of style like the 70’s stuff did as soon as that decade got over.

Remember when deciding bedding based on brand it is all about what the brand can offer you and your nursery.  It is about choosing the style that fits your personality. It’s about creating an environment that makes baby and mommy happy!
