The Art of Baby Bedding & Crib Bedding Fabric -Fabrics Frenzy
It’s an exciting time to be alive. There are so many options to choose from when it comes to selecting baby bedding. Part of the process of selecting baby bedding is choosing the right fabric. Now, if you don’t know much about fabric and its terminology then you might get a little confused by what it all means. So, we broke it down into something manageable that is easy to understand for the innocent bystander, who has heard of some of the terms before, but does not know much else.
Selecting Your Fabric
People select fabric based on different criteria. Some may select fabrics because on the texture, how soft it feels etc. Others select their fabric based on its breathability and whether or not it is healthy for the baby. Others choose fabric based on where it was grown, like those individuals who are “Made in the USA” fans and others who desire the elite status of European grown products like Italian cotton or Irish linen. What Makes Them Different?What most people may not be aware of is that many of the fabrics on the market are made up of the same fibers, but they are woven differently to create a different feel and texture. The Fibers
· Animal Fibers:
o Wool – the hair from sheep or goats, cashmere a luxurious form of wool from the hair from the cashmere goat of India
o Silk – the fibers from the cocoon of the Chinese silkworm
· Plant Fibers:
o Cotton – Egyptian cotton coming from a cotton plant that as longer fiber & feels softer, Pima cotton, having a little shorter fibers than it’s Egyptian counterpart
o Flax – Linen is the most common fabric made of flax
· Synthetic Fibers:
o Polyester – Fleece is a common fabric made of polyester
The Weaves & Patterns – All other terms that you may find when selecting fabrics is then based on the type of fiber that is used and how it is woven. Based off of these things you can get different textures, weights and designs that are created. Many of the terms you may find that fit into this category are: chenille, poplin, jersey, satin, pique, organdy, taffeta, flannel and jacquard. We can’t forget about organic. Now, organic fabrics are naturally, any of those fibers that are non-synthetic and are raised void of pesticides or in the case of animal fibers; the animals have not been injected with hormones, antibiotics or protected using insecticides. Many people are switching over to these fabrics because they feel they are healthier for their baby and the environment.
